NuMu — My UX design process

As a UX challenge, a firm(that shall not be named) has been approached by a large college fraternity — NuMu — to design an interactive map for matriculating students.

They’d like users to search through colleges and universities around the world to see which NuMu chapter is located at any given school.

My Task: Translating given data spread (literally a colorful excel spreadsheet) into actionable insights for design.

Meet NuMu

A fraternity from Atlanta, GA who wants to create a unified locator platform for fraternities globally.

NuMu Mission

Create a holistic view of global fraternities while enabling a user to locate and contact a fraternity chapter of his choice.

Data Overview

723 chapters recorded.

344 alumni chapters.
379 active-student chapters.

48 had affiliations.

Phase 1: Discovery

Phase 2: Persona Development

“As a prospective student, I want to be able to distinguish students chapters from alumni chapters, so that I can only see the ones relevant for me to join.”

A product for Student Sam MUST have:

  • Be able to research fraternities
  • Be able to filter active-student chapters from alumni chapters
  • Be able to locate and contact them

GOOD TO HAVE:

  • Be able to distinguish NuMu chapters
  • See the outreach of fraternities through their affiliations

“As an alumni, I want to find fraternities closest to me,

so I can easily engage with them.”

A product for Alumni Adam MUST have:

  • Check proximity of fraternities
  • Be able to research both college and alumni fraternities
  • Be able to easily locate and contact them

GOOD TO HAVE:

  • Be able to distinguish NuMu chapters
  • See the outreach of fraternities through their affiliations

Phase 3: Task Flows

Scenario 1

Active Student differentiates between student and alumni chapters.

Scenario 2

Prospective student differentiates between student and alumni chapters.

Scenario 3

Alumni locates nearby fraternities to engage with.

Phase 4: Early Findings + Design Implications

Rough mapping of data insights

Further areas of research

Low-fidelity contextual inquiry of the 3 scenarios to identify pain points in the current state of the user flow.
